While we had the roof torn up, we replaced an aging, badly placed skylight in the kitchen. It always feels a bit scary to me to cut holes in the roof. The top photo shows the new placement of the skylight from the top side. You can see the patched-in area at the top of the photo. We moved the skylight about 2 feet from the interior wall to the center of the kitchen.

The second photo shows NM blue sky through the hole in the roof. Better to see blue sky than thunderheads until the skylight is in place and the roofing installed!

The final photo shows the kitchen with the completed skylight and the patched ceiling. I'm loving it!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13634597744924934167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1945392228780410039.post-50626704468159241152018-07-21T10:05:00.000-07:002018-07-21T10:05:02.433-07:00

The roof needed some work! We had the old tar and gravel roof scraped off and a new torched down roof installed. You can see the chimney for the bedroom kiva fireplace in the top photo. And, that's my husband playing the role of the shadow!

The second photo shows the new roof and the small second story room. The raised parapet walls between sections of the home were wrapped with the roofing material and all the vent penetrations were properly sealed. The secret to a leak-proof flat roof is sealing the transitions from one material to another and keeping those areas carefully maintained.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13634597744924934167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1945392228780410039.post-60876242755800011522018-07-19T09:55:00.000-07:002018-07-19T09:55:45.751-07:00

We're working this summer on a new project in Placitas! We bought an adobe home built in the 1970s and we're restoring and upgrading it. Once it is fixed up, it will be another of our rental homes. Watch for updates in my blog.

Here is a photo of the bedroom. Classic adobe kiva fireplace, brick floors, viga and plank ceilings and thick adobe mud walls. We just had a new exterior door installed.
The monsoon season of afternoon rains is about to begin in the Placitas/Albuquerque area. Many people who have lived in New Mexico for any length of time joke that the monsoon rains begin on July 4 between the time you’ve eaten your picnic lunch and the time the fireworks start! The afternoon thunderstorms can be intense and dramatic, but generally last less than an hour and cool down the temperatures for a pleasant evening outdoors!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13634597744924934167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1945392228780410039.post-71935203350959256712017-06-21T12:10:00.002-07:002017-06-22T08:54:17.334-07:00

Summer heat. Everyone in New Mexico is talking about our heat wave this week. Afternoon temperatures over 100 degrees. When I go out in the late afternoon or evening, the heat lets me know it is SUMMER. It makes me feel nostalgic. I remember being a kid in Albuquerque in the summer. Lots of extra freedom. No home work, no schedule. Playing outside with friends and neighbors in the heat of the day (finding the shady spots or running through the sprinklers). Hanging out in the long, warm evenings---telling tales, sharing secrets. Sitting in the twilight on the still-sun-warmed sidewalks. Feeling the coolness of the lawn as you walk barefoot from the hot pavement to cool grass. Sticky popsicles that you can't eat quite fast enough to keep them from melting and oozing an orange path from your hand to your elbow.

The memories hit me the second I feel the heat---they rush at me even before I can think the words that describe them.

I don't mind the summer heat.
Purple asters bloom in late summer in New Mexico. They are blooming everywhere now! They start around the same time as roasting green chile and last beyond the State Fair and into the Balloon Fiesta. Wow! I must have had my head in the clouds all summer! I haven't been blogging, but have kept myself busy. We've had wonderful late summer rains. Enjoying the rural lifestyle! We got the 1948 Farmall Cub running and doing some work! What a hoot! Placitas offers many different lifestyles---we enjoy the old acequia and our orchard and vineyard.
You should check out the great information from the New Mexico Extension Service at http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_circulars/CR457/

There is very specific information available about when to plant, how to plant, how close to plant, types of veggies that do well in NM. Lots of great details.

I plan on having a great garden this year with at least tomatoes and chile! Photos from previous years!
TIJERAS It's a town. It's a canyon. It's an avenue. It is pronounced tee-HAIR-us and literally means scissors in Spanish. I think the naming of the canyon came first because of the sharp angles in the cut between the Sandia and Manzano Mountains east of Albuquerque. The town of Tijeras is located in Tijeras Canyon. Tijeras Avenue runs east to west with a segment west of UNM to I-25 and a segment west of Broadway to 14 St. Downtown. This photo is Tijeras Ave. at 5th St. headed south.

New Mexico at its winter best! I love it all year 'round. The temperature is a little nippy today, but the sunshine is delightful! Put on your hat and gloves and go for a walk. This photo is taken in Placitas about 2.5 miles east of I-25.
We still have lots of snow on the ground and a cold wind blowing through Placitas. This would be a good day for green chile stew!

My favorite way to make Green Chile Stew: brown 1 pound ground turkey in a large, heavy saucepan. add 2 or 3 cloves of finely diced garlic and continue browning until the garlic is soft. Add 2 or 3 large potatoes, peeled and diced in large chunks. Add enough water to cover potatoes (just barely). Cover and cook until the potatoes are cooked, but not mushy. Add one pound of frozen chopped green chile and simmer until the kitchen smells great and you're really hungry! Salt to taste and add a bit of dried oregano, if desired. Serve with sliced or grated yellow cheddar cheese on top and hot homemade flour tortillas on the side. Yum!
Best breakfast food every invented---huevos rancheros. WHEY-vos ranch-AIR-os. Literally, ranch eggs. Fried eggs on a corn tortilla smothered with chile (red or green or both) topped with cheese (melted) and served with pinto beans (no, not black beans) and hash browned potatoes. I strongly recommend scrambled eggs and green chile. Take exit 242 between Albuquerque and Santa Fe and head up the hill.
The sign reads: The Sandia Mountain have been occupied by human beings for thousands of years. This area was settled by 1767, when Governor Pedro Fermin de Mendinueta made the land grant known as La Merced de San Antonio de las Huertas. The area is called "las placitas" because it contains several villages, also know as "plazas." Descendants of the stockmen and farmers who first settled the grant still live in the vicinity.
